In this paper, we extend the high order finite-difference method with subcell resolution (SR) in [34] for two-species stiff one-reaction models to multispecies and multireaction inviscid chemical reactive flows, which are significantly more difficult because of the multiple scales generated by different reactions. For reaction problems, when the reaction time scale is very small, the reaction zone scale is also small and the governing equations become very stiff. Wrong propagation speed of discontinuity may occur due to the underresolved numerical solution in both space and time. The present SR method for reactive Euler system is a fractional step method. In the convection step, any high order shock-capturing method can be used. In the reaction step, an ODE solver is applied but with certain computed flow variables in the shock region modified by the Harten subcell resolution idea. Several numerical examples of multispecies and multireaction reactive flows are performed in both one and two dimensions. Studies demonstrate that the SR method can capture the correct propagation speed of discontinuities in very coarse meshes.

We couple a node-centered finite volume method to a high order finite difference method to simulate dynamic earthquake ruptures along nonplanar faults in two dimensions. The finite volume method is implemented on an unstructured mesh, providing the ability to handle complex geometries. The geometric complexities are limited to a small portion of the overall domain and elsewhere the high order finite difference method is used, enhancing efficiency. Both the finite volume and finite difference methods are in summation-by-parts form. Interface conditions coupling the numerical solution across physical interfaces like faults, and computational ones between structured and unstructured meshes, are enforced weakly using the simultaneous-approximation-term technique. The fault interface condition, or friction law, provides a nonlinear relation between fields on the two sides of the fault, and allows for the particle velocity field to be discontinuous across it. Stability is proved by deriving energy estimates; stability, accuracy, and efficiency of the hybrid method are confirmed with several computational experiments. The capabilities of the method are demonstrated by simulating an earthquake rupture propagating along the margins of a volcanic plug.

Moment equations provide a flexible framework for the approximation of the Boltzmann equation in kinetic gas theory. While moments up to second order are sufficient for the description of equilibrium processes, the inclusion of higher order moments, such as the heat flux vector, extends the validity of the Euler equations to non-equilibrium gas flows in a natural way.
Unfortunately, the classical closure theory proposed by Grad leads to moment equations, which not only suffer from a restricted hyperbolicity region but are also affected by non-physical sub-shocks in the continuous shock-structure problem if the shock velocity exceeds a critical value. A more recently suggested closure theory based on the maximum entropy principle yields symmetric hyperbolic moment equations. However, if moments higher than second order are included, the computational demand of this closure can be overwhelming. Additionally, it was shown for the 5-moment system that the closing flux becomes singular on a subset of moments including the equilibrium state.
Motivated by recent promising results of closed-form, singular closures based on the maximum entropy approach, we study regularized singular closures that become singular on a subset of moments when the regularizing terms are removed. In order to study some implications of singular closures, we use a recently proposed explicit closure for the 5-moment equations. We show that this closure theory results in a hyperbolic system that can mitigate the problem of sub-shocks independent of the shock wave velocity and handle strongly non-equilibrium gas flows.

Realistic and accurate computer simulations of the particle-hemodynamics in arterial systems can be a valuable tool for numerous biomedical applications. Examples include optimal by-pass grafting and optimal drug-delivery, as well as best medical management concerning the cardio-vascular system. However, such numerical analyses require large computer resources which may become prohibitive for extended sets of arterial bifurcations. A remedy is to develop a hybrid model where the first few generations of the bifurcating arteries of interest are simulated in full 3-D, while a 1-D model is then coupled for subsequent bifurcations. Alternatively, a 1-D computer model can be directly employed to simulate fluid-particle transport in complex bifurcating networks.
Relying on a representative axial velocity profile, a physiological 1-D model has been developed and validated, which is capable of predicting with reasonable accuracy arterial flow, pressure field and elastic wall interaction as well as particle transport. The usefulness of the novel 1-D simulation approach is demonstrated via a comparison to 3-D blood flow and microsphere transport in a hepatic artery system, featuring as outlets one major branch and four small daughter vessels. Compared to the 3-D simulation, the 1-D analysis requires only about 1% of computational time. The hybrid modeling approach would be also applicable to the human respiratory tract to evaluate the fate of inhaled aerosols.
A simple and cost-effective way to simulate particle-hemodynamics is using a 1-D model for simulating arterial pressures and flow rates as well as microsphere transport, based on assumptions involving the use of a simple algebraic pressure-area relation, an exponential elasticity model for the vessels, and considering only unidirectional flow with a representative skewed velocity profile. In summary, the novel contributions are:

• Particle tracking in arteries via 1-D fluid modeling and selection of an averaged, skewed velocity profile based on 3-D simulation results to provide more realistic friction and inertia term values for modeling a flow system with bifurcations. 

• The 1-D model can be coupled to a 3-D model so that simulations can be run for larger regions of vascular or lung-airway systems.

In this paper, we will develop a fast iterative solver for the system of linear equations arising from the local discontinuous Galerkin (LDG) spatial discretization and additive Runge-Kutta (ARK) time marching method for the KdV type equations. Being implicit in time, the severe time step ($∆t$=$\mathcal{O}(∆x^k)$, with the $k$-th order of the partial differential equations (PDEs)) restriction for explicit methods will be removed. The equations at the implicit time level are linear and we demonstrate an efficient, practical multigrid (MG) method for solving the equations. In particular, we numerically show the optimal or sub-optimal complexity of the MG solver and a two-level local mode analysis is used to analyze the convergence behavior of the MG method. Numerical results for one-dimensional, two-dimensional and three-dimensional cases are given to illustrate the efficiency and capability of the LDG method coupled with the multigrid method for solving the KdV type equations.

It is well known that conventional edge elements in solving vector Maxwell's eigenvalue equations by the finite element method will lead to the presence of spurious zero eigenvalues. This problem has been addressed for the first order edge element by Kikuchi by the mixed element method. Inspired by this approach, this paper describes a higher order mixed spectral element method (mixed SEM) for the computation of two-dimensional vector eigenvalue problem of Maxwell's equations. It utilizes Gauss-Lobatto-Legendre (GLL) polynomials as the basis functions in the finite-element framework with a weak divergence condition. It is shown that this method can suppress all spurious zero and nonzero modes and has spectral accuracy. A rigorous analysis of the convergence of the mixed SEM is presented, based on the higher order edge element interpolation error estimates, which fully confirms the robustness of our method. Numerical results are given for homogeneous, inhomogeneous, L-shape, coaxial and dual-inner-conductor cavities to verify the merits of the proposed method.

This paper is devoted to the discussion of numerical methods for solving two-dimensional time-fractional advection-diffusion equations. Two different three-point combined compact alternating direction implicit (CC-ADI) schemes are proposed and then, the original schemes for solving the two-dimensional problems are divided into two separate one-dimensional cases. Local truncation errors are analyzed and the unconditional stabilities of the obtained schemes are investigated by Fourier analysis method. Numerical experiments show the effectiveness and the spatial higher-order accuracy of the proposed methods.

This paper studies a local discontinuous Galerkin method combined with fourth order exponential time differencing Runge-Kutta time discretization and a fourth order conservative method for solving the nonlinear Schrödinger equations. Based on different choices of numerical fluxes, we propose both energy-conserving and energy-dissipative local discontinuous Galerkin methods, and have proven the error estimates for the semi-discrete methods applied to linear Schrödinger equation. The numerical methods are proven to be highly efficient and stable for long-range soliton computations. Extensive numerical examples are provided to illustrate the accuracy, efficiency and reliability of the proposed methods.

A novel method is developed for solving the inverse problem of reconstructing the shape of an interior cavity. The boundary of the cavity is assumed to be a small and smooth perturbation of a circle. The incident field is generated by a point source inside the cavity. The scattering data is taken on a circle centered at the source. The method requires only a single incident wave at one frequency. Using a transformed field expansion, the original boundary value problem is reduced to a successive sequence of two-point boundary value problems and is solved in a closed form. By dropping higher order terms in the power series expansion, the inverse problem is linearized and an explicit relation is established between the Fourier coefficients of the cavity surface function and the total field. A nonlinear correction algorithm is devised to improve the accuracy of the reconstruction. Numerical results are presented to show the effectiveness of the method and its ability to obtain subwavelength resolution.

Currently, there exists a lack of confidence in the computational simulation of multiple body high-speed air delivered systems. Of particular interest is the ability to accurately predict the dispersion pattern of these systems under various deployment configurations. Classical engineering-level methods may not be able to predict these patterns with adequate confidence primarily due to accuracy errors attributable to reduced order modeling. In the current work, a new collision modeling capability has been developed to enable multiple-body proximate-flight simulation in the Loci/CHEM framework. This approach maintains high-fidelity aerodynamics and incorporates six degrees of freedom modeling with collision response, and is well-suited for simulation of a large number of projectiles. The proposed simulation system is intended to capture the strong interaction phase early in the projectile deployment, with subsequent transfer of projectile positions and flight states to the more economical engineering-level methods. Collisions between rigid bodies are modeled using an impulse-based approach with either an iterative propagation method or a simultaneous method. The latter is shown to be more accurate and robust for cases involving multiple simultaneous collisions as it eliminates the need to sort and resolve the collisions sequentially. The implementation of both the collision detection methodology and impact mechanics are described in detail with validation studies to demonstrate the efficiency and accuracy of the developed technologies. The studies chronologically detail the findings for simulating simple impacts and collisions between multiple bodies with aerodynamic interference effects.

A biphase mixture continuum mechanics model is derived for neutral heat-shrinkable thermo-sensitive hydrogels in this paper. The mixing free energy of the special mixture is recalculated based on the partition function of Bose system, and it evaluates the contribution of the hydrophilic, hydrophobic interaction and hydrogen bonding to the volume phase transition behaviors. The ideas of the Flory lattice theory and the UNIFAC group contribution method are employed to get the expression of the mixing free energy. Then we deduce a particular model by combining this mixing free energy with the conservation laws equations and constitutive relations of both phases to predict the volume transition behaviors of these special hydrogels.
